The Irish singer was best known for her 1990 release of the single ‘Nothing Compares 2 U.’
The Guardian newspaper contacted the singer’s agents.
In a statement provided to RTÉ, the singer’s family said: “With immense sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad.
Her family and friends are devastated and request privacy during this very difficult time.”
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said: “I am very saddened to hear of Sinéad O’Connor’s death.
Her music was loved worldwide, and her talent was unparalleled and incomparable.”
The singer gained international fame in 1990 with her rendition of the song ‘Nothing Compares 2 U,’
written by Prince. She made the song her own and topped charts in countries all over the world.
The simple yet unforgettable music video for the song featured close-ups of the singer’s shaven head as she performed the ballad with tears streaming down her cheeks.
O’Connor said she was thinking of her mother while singing.
The singer leaves behind three children. Her 17-year-old son, Shane, passed away last year.
